What is Eurogloss?

A glossary of the technical vocabulary used on the building sites of European court residences in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: workmanship, trades, tools and materials. It is produced by COST Action CA24102; see About for the project behind it.

Do I need an account to use the site?

No. The glossary, map, timeline, documents and news are open to everyone, and source documents can be downloaded without signing in. An account only lets you save favourites.

Where do the place and date of a term come from?

From the archival document it is attested in. Every variant cites a source document, and its place and date are read from that document, so the map and timeline show exactly what the sources say.

Why is the headword in English?

The glossary is organised by meaning, so terms from different languages can be compared side by side. Each entry gathers the historical forms of that meaning — in their original languages and spellings — as its variants.

Why does a search not find a historical spelling?

By default the search looks only at the English headwords. Set "Search in" to "All attestations" to search the historical forms as well. The Help page explains the other filters.

Can I share a filtered map or timeline?

Yes. Search terms and filters are stored in the page address, so copying the link from your browser shares the same view.

Who writes the entries?

Researchers of the COST Action, from the archival documents they catalogue. Some entries begin as drafts suggested by automatic analysis of an uploaded document; a researcher reviews each draft before it is published.

How can I contribute?

Editing is reserved to researcher accounts, which the project team creates. If you work on historical construction terminology, you can join the Action through COST — the About page explains how.

Does the site use cookies or track me?

It sets no tracking cookies. Usage is measured without storing any identifier in your browser. Details are in the Privacy Policy and the Cookies Policy.

I found a mistake. How do I report it?

Write to eurogloss.dev (at) gmail.com with the entry or document and what is wrong.
